HISTORY & MILESTONES
Malaysia Steel Works (KL) Bhd ("Masteel") was founded on 25th of March 1971 by the Tai Family which were helmed by the late Mr Tai Chet Siang and Dato' Tai E King J.P.
Masteel was the first Malaysian operator of electric arc furnace to smelt steel scrap to produce steel bars for use in reinforced concrete.
It also operated a reversing mill to roll steel ingots into steel bars.
In 1997, the Petaling Jaya mill was further upgraded to become a fully continuous mill together with the addition of a new reheating furnace that could utilise 1 ton billets.
The capacity of the mill was subsequently upgraded to 450,000mt per year. A thermo quenching line was installed to produce grade 500 deformed bars to meet the ever-increasing demand of our customers. In December 1997, the mill obtained the ISO 9001 certification in recognition of its commitment and dedication to quality management system.
In 1998, a new milestone in the history of Masteel was realised when its new Meltshop in Bukit Raja went into commercial production. The billet production plant supplied by Danieli of Italy became one of the most modern meltshop in operation in the ASEAN region. The electric arc furnace is featured with ultra-high power [UHP] transformers, eccentric bottom tapping (EBT) configuration and fully automated furnace process control and alloy additive plant.
A refining ladle furnace was also added to increase the output & quality of steel billets produced.
A multi-stand large curvature continuous casting machine which could cast high-grade billets up to 160mm x 160mm was also installed. The installed capacity of the Meltshop is 750,000mt of billets per year.
In 2005, Malaysia Steel Works (KL) Bhd ("Masteel") was listed on the Malaysian Stock Exchange ("Bursa Malaysia"). Masteel joined ranks of top publicly traded steel manufacturers in the Asean region.
In 2015, Masteel completed the construction of its 2nd rolling mill of 300,000mt capacity at Bukit Raja specialising in prime grade small diameter steel bars.
The quality control laboratory of the Meltshop is equipped with state-of-the-art testing equipment such as automated spectrometer.
The high consistency of the quality billets produced by its Meltshop has further consolidate the position of the Company as one of the principal steel bars and steel billets manufacturer in ASEAN region.
In 2021, Masteel completed its 4 years revamping programme of its steel making facilities by installing new ultra-low emissions 60mt induction melting furnaces to replace its conventional electrical arc furnace.
These new furnaces are able to produce both carbon and alloy steel.
In 2022 Masteel successful installed and commissioned its new billet direct charging technology that eliminates the use of fossil fuel for billet reheating at its Bukit Raja rolling mill.
Masteel raises industry benchmarks as the 1st ‘ultra low carbon emission’ integrated steel mill in Malaysia. And also the 1st integrated steel mill in Malaysia to be included as a constituent of the FTSE4GOOD Bursa Malaysia Index in December 2022.
In 2023 Masteel commited "Delivering the most sustainable steel for Malaysia and beyond".
In 2024 Masteel established Sustainability Policy. Target to reduce our process GHG emissions by 5.50%.
Masteel obtained a 3rd party assurance by British Standards Institution (BSI) of the United Kingdom.
Masteel awarded RAM Sustainability - Platinum (P) Sustainability Rating with ultra-low GHG emissions high tensile steel bars, which comply with the Malaysian Standard (MS 146:2014), Australasian Certification Authority for reinforcing and structural steels [(ACRS) (Australia)], the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited CARES Certificate standards for reinforcing and structural steels and ISO 9001 (Quality Management System).
RAM Sustainability is the first ASEAN-based provider of ESG ratings and second opinions and has the distinction of being the first Registered Observer of ICMA’s Green Bond Principles, Social Bond Principles, Sustainability Bond Guidelines and Sustainability-Linked Bond Principles in ASEAN.
